No matter how hard you’ve worked on writing your masterpiece, no matter how much research you’ve done, how well you’ve fleshed out your characters, or how successfully you’ve built your conflict, when you’re finished writing, your book will undoubtedly be filled with flaws, big flaws and little ones. It will be riddled with typographical errors, excessive punctuation, passive voice, sketchy transitions and yes, even with the advent of spell check, misspelled words. You know this.
So, you go back and you review the work with a hypercritical eye. You get your friends and significant other to read it. You are not afraid of harassing your co-workers or hairdresser to read it. With so many eyes on it, you believe there is no way you won’t end up with a perfect product at the end of the process.
Confident, you go ahead and submit it to an agent. The agent rejects the manuscript with little explanation. You submit to another agent, and another. You pick out the perfect cover art, get your college professor to write a testimonial, price it just right, get an ISBN number and send it out to the printer.
